Research Question:

Our group was curious to find out if there was a correlation between hours of exercise per week and GPA. To find out if these variables were related we choose the research question, For SLCC students attending the Redwood Campus, does the hours of exercise per week relate to GPA?

Correlation Coefficient:

The correlation coefficient can be used to tell us the strength of the correlation between the two variables, hours of exercise per week and the student’s GPA.

Using the correlation coefficient equation, we found our data's correlation coefficient to be R= -0.0855This coefficient tells us that there is a moderate negative relation between the two qualitative variables.

Critical Value:

The critical value for our data at 0.05 level of significance is .195, which is larger than our correlation coefficient so we believe that there is not a strong enough relation between hours of exercise per week and GPA to determine that they are correlated. We are unable to reject our null hypothesis.

Conclusion:

Our group concluded that our hypothesis, the more a student exercises per week the higher their GPA would be, was not correct. Because our critical value is larger than our R value we concluded that there is not a significant relationship between the variables. There wasn't enough relation between the two variables to prove that there is a true correlation.
